WORKING TITLE: Rise and Fall of the Republic

Premise: Novel/RPG about a human spacefaring nation rise into apex and eventual
decline.

TIMELINE:
2020CE - After years of strenous negotiations and prodding by US and
China, DPRK forms an Unified Korean Confederacy with RoK.
????CE - Fusion technology is perfected.
????CE - Russia develop anti-gravity technology.
????CE - Russia perfects plasma force fields, which protects
anythings from radar detection and physical penetration.
2035CE - Faster than light technology perfected, but full use is
restricted due to instability of the technology.
2100CE - Space elevator is built, spawning full blown space
exploration by both national and private enterprises.
~2120CE - Wormhole was located at the edge of the solar system,
leading to research on inter-system space travel.
2150CE - First artificial wormhole had been perfected, leading to
explosion of space travel.
Note:
Mining and other extractions of resources in space leads to
decline of same industry on Earth. This leads to
destabilization in countries that depends on export of minerals
for survival. Countries like Saudi Arabia, South Africa and
Venezuela face upheaval.
2160CE - Israeli mining station in Mars was destroyed by Islamic
terrorist attack, sparking an international and
interplanetary war.
Note: Military technology kept pace with other technological
development, which means killing power of individual has
increased as well. Space is heavily militarized, with nations
declaring space above their atmosphere, a sovereign territory.
2190CE - After nearly thirty years of intermitten war comes to an
end. While only 600 million died directly to conflict,
additional 2.3 billions died indirectly. Before the
conflict, Earth's population hover around 14 billions.
2193CE - Treaty of Mumbai forbids any conflict that began in space to
spread into Earth.
Note: Few nations that avoided the conflict concentrate their
economic development in establishing colonies in space and
creating mercantilist economy. UKC is one of them. Despite the
danger, many fled to space to avoid conflict. By the time the
Treaty of Mumbai was signed, two billions are in space. Before
the conflict, there was only three hundred millions in space.
2190CE - Period of stagnation in space exploration by nations on
Earth begins as they concentrate on rebuilding the
infrastructure destroyed during the war. Those who are in
space continued the exploration where Earth had left.
Eventually seperate identities are being formed between
those on Earth and in space, which can be more than two.
2200CE - After heated discussion, UKC develops Commonwealth system,
replacing colonial system that was mandate on
interplanetary control. In new system, any colony that has
stable population of more than 100,000 is given an voice in
the National Assembly. Colonies that has population less
than 100,000 have also given limited autonomy. Senator is
chosen by electoral college drawn from specified sector.
Control of colonies by private enterprises is greatly
curtailed after scandal of neglegect on colonists by
corporations led to government interventions.
UKC has charted 1800 systems, colonized 650 initially, but
shrunk to 350 with only 50 having population more than
1,000,000. Largest Commonwealth provinces is Moon
(pop. 25 million), Mars (pop. 25 million), Io
(pop. 5 million) and Hwarang (pop. 10 million), located in
Sambul system. With population on Earth 110 million, UKC has
additional 50 million on geosync orbit around Earth. Total,
225 million live under UKC banner.
2220CE - American colony at Aurora Minor system (pop. 10 million)
declares independence. This triggers independence movements
in other colonies. Although US manages to retain control of
Aurora Minor colony, like other nations, its resources
stretch thin in containing the movement.
To avoid possible conflict, UKC enact Bifical system. In
which control of UKC colonies is divided into two
administrative regions. One center is at Earth and the other
is at Sambul system. UKC retains military and foreign
policies at Earth, but legistlative, economic and social
policies is allowed by Sambul.
Population in UKC:
Earth - 100 million
In geosync - 75 million
On moon - 50 million
On Mars - 100 million
On Io - 15 million
On Hwarang - 22 million
By concentrating on 350 systems, UKC is able to
maintain strong population growth in its colonies. With
total population of 450 million.*
* Not all the population are ethnically Korean.
Population on Earth: 18 billion
- United States: 600 million
- China: 850 million
- India: a billion
Population in space:
- 4 billion on Mars
- 4 billion elsewhere
2231CE - Due to Earth's overpopulation and with too many people
living near Earth's periphery, Solar League advocate mass
relocation of population. This spark intense debate and
violence. Violence spawn terrorism, and eventually into
regional conflict. Eventually Treaty of Mumbai is broken
as conflict spread into space.
2233CE-2272CE - War caused considerable chaos and leads to collapse
in infrastructure in both in space and Earth. Intensity of
war eventually petered out and ended without any formal
proclamation. It lead to balkanization in both in space and
in Earth, sometime leading to warlordism. The conflict lead
to mass migration to space by people who want to avoid the
war. The war lead to death of two billion, both directly
and indirectly.
Earth population : 10 billion
- 85 million in Korean peninsula
- 450 million in USA
Mars population: 6 billion
Space population: 8 billion
Total population in UKC: 500 million
2285CE - Hwarang declares independence from UKC and declares itself
Republic of Goryo. UKC, unwilling to wage war against Goryo
for fear of being preyed upon by other nations, duly
recognize the Republic of Goryo. Treaty is formed which
boundary is defined between Goryo and UKC.
Republic of Goryo is composed of 67 inhabited systems with
interest in 300 other systems and has population of 100
million.
2310CE - A new international organization is formed called United
Earth Directorate. It establish near dictatorial power on
most of Earth, Mars and in Space. It espouse 'urity' of
Earth and enact force to 'cleanse' Earth's orbit of man-made
objects. Many people living in geo-synch orbit relocated to
Mars and Space. 30 million UKC citizens emigrate to Goryo.
UKC population:
Earth - 90 million
Moon - 100 million
Mars - 200 million
Io - 20 million
Republic of Goryo population: 143 million
